After picking hero, player will be able to choose 3 standart skills and 1 ultimate skill for its hero immediately and he shouldn't wait for others. Every chosen skill will be removed from taverns, so 1 ability allowed to be picked only for 1 hero in all game (without -da submode ofc).
Pick Abilities will be compatible with any other standart mode, and won't be compatible with Random Abilities or Abilities Draft. Also, -pa will be compatible with -noherolimit, so you can choose abilities for every your hero.
Maybe, there will be command -randomize like standart -random in -ap with opportunity to repick abilities.

• Disabled Skills
- Disabled Skills submode will add every working ability to skills pool.
- This addition will be constant for Pick Abilities and Abilities Draft, but every player can set on/off this mode for itself in Random Abilities.

If the first time the item is lost from its original owner it is picked up by an allied hero, it becomes muted (no damage) until it returns to its owner. If an enemy acquires the rapier, it same rules as the previous version. Here are the complete rapier rules to clarify:
- "Original Rapier" has two modes, active and muted. It is active (bonus damage, droppable) when carried by the owner and muted (no damage, droppable) when carried by an ally
- "Free Rapier" is the item state that occurs when an enemy acquires it. This is a permanent transformation for the item. It will always provide bonusdamage and will always be undroppable, regardless of how it switches sides back and forth afterwards. This is the same as the previous patch.
Summary: The primary change that is done here is that a hero cannot intentionally pool the rapier to his ally.

* -unlock now requires a majority vote before the gold and items of a leaver will be released. As a reminder, once a hero is unlocked, it cannot be switched.

* Added a 15 second wait period before the drafting begins in -CD to give both teams a chance to look at the heroes.

* Renamed the controlon/off commands to be clearer which is which. They are now -disableselection (-ds) and -enableselection (-es)

* Various map optimizations
* Fixed an old recipe fusing exploit with leaver items that could result in crashes

* The unit inside the iceblock gets damage after a full second, that means that Level 1 Frostbite deals the same damage as Level 2 (140/140); level 3 deals the same damage as Level 4(210/210).
* Some "movement" spells work inside the Iceblock, those are:
Blinkstrike/ Phantomstrike (Nessaj, Rikimaru and Mortred), Waveform (Morphling), Timewalk (Void), Leap (Mirana), Nether Swap (Vengeful Spirit), Poof (Meepo), Morph Replicate (Morphling), Haunt/Reality (Spectre) and Illusory Orb (Puck).
* You can use Invisibility-Skills, but CM's team has TrueSight while the Frostbite effect is on you.
* Lasts 10 seconds on creeps level 5 or lower. Also disables summons like Furion's Treants or Invoker's fire minions for 10 seconds. * You can't use Frostbite on Units that are 'flying' (movetype: flying, for example Batrider using Firefly)
* The bitten unit forgets his last order, such as spells

We use this spell to keep enemies from running away. It helps us to use our ultimate, but the Hero inside the iceblock is still able to cast spells!
To damage the bitten enemy you should cancel your animation. (After you used Frostbite click fast on the ground to cancel your animation, then again fast on the bitten enemy)

[Level 1] - 1.5 seconds Duration, 10 seconds cooldown, uses 115 Manapoints (70 damage every second)

Brilliance Aura:
Gives additional mana regeneration to all friendly units on the entire map.
* Stacks with the Brilliance Aura given by Ring of Basillus
* The bonus mana regeneration is not considered for percentage mana regeneration increases
* This spell affects all friendly units with a manapool (Global)
* Got nerfed in 6.60 from 0.75/1.5/2.25/3 to 0.5/1/1.5/2
* When the Crystal Maiden turns invisible (Invisibility Rune, Lothar's Edge) the the Aura is disabled. So you can know if Rylai is invisible

Since this ability was made 6.49 to a global effect, CM was banned (or picked, when not banned of course!) nearly always in competitive matches. This spell is very strong, it helps your whole team and it's still active when CM left the game (when she's frozen in her circle, only important for public games, you could think of a strategy which is skilling up the Aura if it's not already on Level 4). Heroes like Zeus or Storm Spirit can spam their spells early, this is a big advantage on every lane .

Freezing Field:
Causes many random icy explosions in an area surrounding Rylai. Enemy units in the Freezing Field are slowed. Can be improved by Aghanim's Scepter.

* The slow is applied on all enemy units within an AoE of 635, even if they aren't hit by any explosion (lasts 1 second).
* Every 0.1 seconds one explosion is made, for a total of 40 explosions.
* Area of Effect: 635. Every single explosion has also an AoE: 190.
* Hits invisible Heroes
* Can be improved by Aghanim's Scepter (* shows the improved values).
* Doesn't stack with Freezing Field, Eye of Skadi, Lichs Frost Nova, Frost Armor, Dual Breath, Frost Breath
[Level 1] - Each explosion deals 105 (170*) damage, 150 seconds cooldown, uses 300 Manapoints, 4 seconds Duration
[Level 2] - Each explosion deals 170 (250*) damage, 120 seconds cooldown, uses 400 Manapoints, 4 seconds Duration
[Level 3] - Each explosion deals 250 (310*) damage, 90 seconds cooldown, uses 600 Manapoints, 4 seconds Duration

This spell is incredibly strong, but has also a very high Manacost. With this ultimate you can easily win teamclashes, but normally it gets cancelled very fast. You will need Black King Bar & maybe a dagger to position Freezing Field right. More to that in the items section. Freezing Field hits also invisible Heroes and slows them, you can use this ability to finish invisible heroes with low health off.

Q: "Why do we skill Frostbite on Level 1 and not Brilliance Aura?"
A: We don't need Brilliance Aura on Level 1. Normally you are level 2 after 30 seconds on the lane. We also use it for early clashs (rune clashes, early gangs etc.).
Q: "Why do we skill Crystal Nova on Level 4/ Level 12-14 and not Stats?"
A: => Variatons
Q: "Why don't we skill Freezing Field on Level 6?"
A: We won't need it that early. We just don't have the manapool, and we won't use it because clashes aren't that early. In some cases you need Freezing Field earlier, for example, when your facing invisible heroes. Just swap it with the last levels of Frostbite.
Q: "Why do we max Brilliance Aura first?"
A: Brilliance Aura is our main spell to assist our teammates, 2.0 Mana regeneration is a lot.

I prefer going on Crystal Nova on Level 1, Frostbite on Level 2 and then the normal way.

That's completely situational, if you think you can kill your lane enemies early with your mate, you should go on Frostbite Level 2. It also depends on the enemie's lineup.

Q: "Why Ironwood Branches and not Circlets of Nobility? Won't we need them later for Bracers?"
A: That's right, we need them later for Bracers. But the cost/ performance ratio of Ironwood Branches is much better. Plus you may need the Ironwood Branches too, if you'd like to build Mekansm. Ironwood Branch: 19 Gold per stat point, Circlet of Nobility: 31 Gold per stat point. (If you are german you can read this topic on dotasource.de)

Earlygame Items to Midgame Items

You should buy 1-2 Bracers, Crystal Maiden is a Low-HP Hero.
Keep 2 of the Ironwood Branches if you want to build Mekansm!
Get Observer Wards (you will probably need 4-8 stacks if you are alone with warding, this depends on the game length and the necessity). The guide in the Warding section shows you where to place them. Buy a Magic Stick and upgrade it to a Magic Wand if you want to. Get either Dust of Appearance or Sentry Wards if you have to counter invisible heroes.
I suggest that you just buy some Boots of Speed. If you want to upgrade those, buy Power Treads (which is normally not needed, I usually just use the normal Boots for the whole game) or Phase Boots, Crystal Maiden makes good use of them, the 24 damage bonus is awesome for harassing and additional hits on a Frostbitten target, and the Phase ability lets you escape better. Never buy Boots of Travel, they just cost to much. You can make better use of the gold. Town Portal Scrolls do the trick.

With 6.65 we got a nice new support item: the Urn of Shadows. Mostly gankers/ roamers and/ or supporters buy it. Only one in the team should have the Urn, only one Urn will gain charges so a second one is useless. With the +6 strength it provides you can skip either both or only one Bracer (depends, if you want even more survivability get Urn & 2 Bracers). The use is quite obvious, we heal ourself and our teammates with it after ganks.
We should get Urn before the midgame, but rushing it isn't that good too. If you think it's already to late or you just don't need it (you just have no chance to use the charges), skip it.

You should get Mekansm, due to it's high support it's a high priority item for Crystal Maiden!
I mentioned the single parts because they give also good support bonusses without being together as Mekansm.

Optional:

Get Vladmir's Offering if your carry/ carries skip it. (Ring of Basilius' Aura and Vladmir's Offering Aura stack with Brilliance Aura)
You think that it's crazy to buy Vladmir's for a ranged hero, since they don't really benefit from it? Nope, that's just wrong. You are a support hero, means that you buy support items. And Vladmir's Offering is one of the best support items, since it gives several auras and (additional) lifesteal.

The ghost scepter is actually one of the must underestimated items in DotA. I don't really know why, it's the best item versus Heroes like Ursa or Mortred. They just can't do anything against it. Plus, for 1500, it gives additionally 7 statpoints which is good too. Well, the negative part is that it uses an item spot, which you will probably need for other things.

In long games you can try to get Black King Bar & Kelen's Dagger or Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse.

Sidenote:

Your teammates can push you with the Force Staff while you're channeling Freezing Field. But care! That doesn't mean that you can push yourself, the channling will break then.

Variations (or: Items to buy in pubs)

There are no real variations, it depends all on your team and your enemies.
So I'll give you some examples for possible public builds:

General play style:

Early Game:
Most of the time you are in a double lane with a hero like N'aix, Yurnero or Tidehunter. Let your carry block the creeps and go to the rune Spawnpoint, you can see the runes from this ledge in the sentinel's forest. The first rune spawns at 0:00, they respawn every 2 minutes.

Let your carry always get all of the lasthits, and don't waste your manaregeneration by not using your mana to harass the enemy. Of course you may also harass with normal hits (which works very well with Crystal Maiden's animation). Always try to denie and protect your carry.

Mid Game:
Use Frostbite and Crystal Nova to disable your enemy and slow their movement speed. If you are Level 10+ use your ultimate to deal great damage with a big slow. You can easily kill high Level Creeps with Frostbite, like the Centaur Khan. Level 1 Frostbite and a few hits are enough to kill him.

Late Game:
Dagger in the enemies, activate Black King Bar, use Crystal Nova a single time, and use Freezing Field. When anyone gets out of this deadly combination try to finish him with another Crystal Nova and/ or Frostbite. If everything goes well you may win a clash very easily with this rotation. Without Black King Bar you normally die very fast, Crystal Maiden is just to fragile. Don't be ashamed when you have a bad score in the end, that's normal, just be happy if your team wins!

Crystal Maiden is a low HP & Low MS hero. You can kill her easily when Frostbite & Crystal Nova are on Cooldown. Chasing is the best way to kill her, or just nuke her down. Getting stunned is a deadly moment for Crystal Maiden. Normally she dies very fast, so try to gang her very often before she gets Kelen's Dagger and/ or Black King Bar. If Crystal Maiden activates her Ultimate, Freezing Field, try to get fast out of the area. Don't forget that Freezing Field is a channeling spell, you can easily break it by stunning her.

A wandering vagrant of the Mok’nathal, the fabled half orc-half ogres of legend, Rexxar and his mighty blades have joined the cause of the Sentinel to better protect the natural world around him. A friend of beasts, Rexxar flails and tears at his enemies with unsettling savagery even going as far as hurling his axes in the manner of boomerangs at his enemies to better his chances at victory. Truly a warrior of the living planet that thrives around him, the Beastmaster is an ally to be counted on when he is needed the most.

Wild Axes

Manacost: 120 at all levels.
Cooldown: 13 seconds.

Rexxar hurls his two axes outward, which then intersect and return to him. Each axe can only damage a unit once.

Call of the Wild

Manacost: 25 at all levels
Cooldown: 40 seconds

Rexxar calls upon wild beasts to aid him. The duration, strength and number of beasts increases per level. Previous summons are removed upon casting.

Level 1 - Summons a Scout Hawk.
Level 2 - Summons a Scout Hawk and a Quilbeast.
Level 3 - Summons a Greater Hawk and a Quilbeast.
Level 4 - Summons a Greater Hawk and a Greater Quilbeast.

Skill Build Explanation

Call of the Wild is taken first because the scout is needed for constant rune checks. Wild Axes maxed first to increase damage output in ganks. Call of the Wild then maxed for it’s slow. Inner Beasst taken next for the IAS provided. Primal Roar taken wherever possible for ganking purposes.

Items Overview

Starting Items

Grab two sets of Tangoes, a Ring of Protection and Circlet at the start. Tangoes are primarily for healing during the laning stage. Ring of Protection to be made in to a Ring of Basilius to fix the mana problem and a Circlet to make the basic stat item, a Bracer.

Level 6

Rush a Bottle as it is a core ganking items. Storing runes is extremely valuable when ganking, especially Haste, Double Damage and Invisibility. After this build up an Urn of Shadows for more mana regen plus the Strength provided is equal to that of a Bracer.

Level 11

Get Necronomicon ASAP. 9% movespeed bonus plus a slow from your pig will certainly make a successful gank. Mana burn and break also useful against blinkers or those with TP scrolls.

Level 16

Next up are Boots of Travel. The mobility give is needed for what you will primarily be doing later on, pushing. The movespeed provided plus Necrosummons’ movespeed aura means you’ll be chasing a lot.

Level 25

Once you make it to this stage, make a Vlad’s IF AND ONLY IF your team carry doesn’t have the space or your team has more than three melee heroes.

Late Game

Vlad’s give your team more survivability and damage. Shiva’s provides a huge boost to armor and mana plus gives you a nuke.

Alternative Items

Anything to help you get close to your opponent, therefore not wasting stun time. In the case of Dagger, you can blink into his face and Roar.

Get a Sange only if your whole team has no disable/stun o.O The slow together with your pig should bring anyone down.

Lots of beefy enemy heroes? Corrupt them.

You MAY build an AC if there is no other AC carrier on your team. It provides more IAS, a huge 15 armor to yourself, and 5 to your allies. It also helps if your carry relies on physical damage as it reduces enemy armour.

Having a hard time with spells? Hood should solve the problem.

Rejected Items

BM’s role is not to farm his ass off, but to gank. Battle Fury is for farming purposes and should not be gotten on Rexxar.

This item on Rexxar has one word written all over it, pubbers. Rexxar doesn’t need the damage OR the movespeed, he has Necronomicon for that. Plus it doesn’t give any mana, something that Rexxar really needs.

Wild Axes

Wild Axes is best used when:

- Harassing if your lane opponent throws shit in your general direction.
- You are chasing a low HP hero through trees.
- After Primal Roar to dish out damage.
- Pushing.

Wild Axes also destroys trees. Take note of this as it will mean a successful or failed gank. Use it if you need to cut through a swath of trees to get to an enemy or to escape. Shoot them across the fog of war if you think an enemy is there.

They also deal quite a bit of damage, 360 at level 4. One Primal Roar and Wild Axes will easily bring down any heroes HP to around half at the very least.

Call of the Wild

Call of the Wild is best used when:

- You areabout to gank somebody and you need something to slow him.
- You are running away and your enemies are catching up.
- Scouting for runes or enemies.

Call of the Wild gives you two summoned units for 60 seconds. One being a Quillbeast (pig) and the other a Scout Hawk.

The pig’s use is very easy to think of, slowing. Slow the enemy during a gank, slow him if he tower dives, slow him if your allies are coming. The Hawk is used for scouting out the nearby area for runes, enemies or creep camps.

Always remember to keep the pig up. The skill only costs 25 mana. When you’re ganking, recast it for the increased duration. You don’t want the pig to disappear during a gank.

Primal Roar

It provides a whopping 3 second stun to a target, more than enough time for you and your allies to beat the shit out of the guy who took the side damage and slow. By the time you're done with him. The stun should be over, just in time for you to send the next person back to his fountain.

Primal Roar shouldn’t be just thrown around. Try to aim so that all the opponent’s allies are damaged and slowed. Your team will benefit from this as the one hero stunned will be easy to kill, plus you have a headstart in killing the others.

Primal Roar also has its uses if there are two heroes who have around medium health. Aim Primal Roar so that the stronger one OR the one with stuns/disables is stunned and the other slowed. Kill the one who is stunned as the slow will keep the other one from escaping.

The best stun in DotA at level 1. Nuff said.

8. Strategy

Gameplay Walkthrough

Early Game Level 1 ~ 6
Get the Circlets, Tangoes and Ring of protection and head off to a lane. If possible, get a bot or top with an allied stunner/slower.

Farm as usual and complete Ring of Basilius in lane. If you have a team courier, have it ferry over a Bottle ASAP. If not go back and get it once you are level 6. If your opponents are orbwalkers like Viper or Clinkz, don’t hesitate to use one or two Wild Axes on them. They will lose HP quickly, especially Clinkz.

Mid Game Level 6 ~ 15
Start ganking the moment you reach level 6 and your Primal Roar has finished cooling down. Generally, gank the solo lanes first as they are probably the ones who need to farm a lot. However, if you have an ally with you, don’t hesitate to kill your lane opponents. Get Boots and Necronomicon at this stage for increased movespeed. Whenever Primal Roar is on cooldown, farm the lanes or jungle.

Gank their carry most of the time, but don’t forget to gank the others as some supporters prove deadly when farmed. An example of this would be Earthshaker. Let him farm the classic Refresher and you’re a goner.

Always try to push the creeps right up to an enemy tower before ganking. That way, when enemies see you’ve disappeared off the map, they may think you’re just waiting for the creeps to be pushed back. Make them pay for ignorance =D

Late Game Level 16 ~ 25
Team fights will begin at this stage of the game. Hopefully you have gotten all core items and ready for a huge battle. Try to stay in the middle of your team to provide your IAS aura to the whole team.

The moment a teamfight starts, Primal Roar the enemy carry, spawn the Necronomicon summons and your pig and proceed the beat the living hell out of the carry, then pick off the other heroes. You are most likely to be to most effective chaser with you pig and Necrosummons. When the teamfight ends, TP to other lanes and push. Rinse and repeat til victory.

Ganking Combos

In most cases the combo is fairly simple, Primal Roar from fog or behind trees, then throw Wild Axes, summon everything and start swinging those Axes. In some cases there may be two heroes. As said before Stun the stronger one and get rid of the weaker one before the stun runs out.

With a Dagger, you can blink into the opponent's face and Roar. Saving you time to walk up to him.

Survival

Survival for Rexxar is easy as he is a Strength hero and he has a pig which can slow chasers. However, like any other hero, stuns will kill you. So you have judge for yourself, when they will come after you or if they will leave you alone.

Now, in cases where there are two or more heroes after you, spawn the pig and Primal Roar the one with the stun (if there isn’t any just pick one.) Use your pig to slow the hero who took the side damage and slow.

Team Play

As usual, gank your butt off once you are level 6. You cannot allow anyone to farm up anything. Complete the Necrnomicon fast for the auras and Truesight which come in handy later in the game. Manaburn and break beats down those strength casters as well.

In team battles, you are the initator, Primal Roar the enemy carry, send your Axes flying, spawn Necrosummons and pig. Obviously, beat down their carry first as he is the biggest threat to your team. Then, proceed to beat the living hell out of the enemy team, which probably can’t do shit without the carry.

Notable Allies

These heroes have something in common, skills that move in a straight line and in the case of Mirana and Pudge, must have nothing between the hero and themselves. That’s where you come in, clear everyone aside and let it rip.

In most games, we know him as “that guy who can’t pull off the perfect Requiem” with you, that changes. The stun provides more than enough time for him get into position and still deal the max damage to the opponent hero.

Zombie Driver

Chen's Skills themselves are very simple. There's not much more to say than 'click on the skill icon, click on an enemy, he becomes slower and gets more damage. The bonus damage is phyisical, though, and gets therefore reduced by armor.
With this skill, your allies can deal more damage and your creeps can reach the enemy hero more easily and use their spells.
What I read recently in an mechanics thread in the DA forum:
If the Penitence slow is purged, the unit will continue to receive extra damage for the remaining time.

Test of Faith

(Active, Single-Target, Affects any unit)
If cast on enemy, will deal variable damage based on the unit's faith. If cast on allied Hero, it will teleport the hero to safety. Instantly teleports Chen's persuaded units to safety.

Aaahhh, the skill what makes the hero. You can control any non-hero unit on the map except Ancients like Dragons or Roshan. The best would be if you control big and scary neutrals with spells instead of those cute kobolds. You can find more information about the controllable creeps below.
If you persuade a new creep above your max unit count, a random persuaded unit (which could be the one you just persuaded) will die.
Beware of Hand of Midas, Lucifer, Naix or Clinkz (more information below), they can transmute, eat, infest or death pact your persuaded creeps.

Hand of God

Fully regenerates your converted creeps. Heals all allied heroes on the map.

Stats:

1. Creeps we want to persuade:

There are 3 Camps every Chen loves to see. Namely the Furlbolg camp, the Centaur camp and the strong Troll camp. Those units are the best you can get because they offer disables.
The Furlbolg offers the best damage you can get and a 25% slow within a 300 AoE. Almost sure firstblood if you can get the stomp off nex to a stunner assisting you.
The Centaur is a great creep the entire game. 2 seconds of AoE stun is just devasting and the attackspeed aura helps your allies.
The Troll helps in initiating a gank, because he can ensnare a unit from 550 range which gives your Centaur/ Furlbolg/ ally time to get close and unleash their spells. He also supports pushing by summoning two additional units.
Just to have mentioned it, Furlbolgs are better early game because their Stomp deals more damage than the Centaur stomp and the slow is almost as good as the stun early on.

2. Creeps we should persuade:

There are two big camps left which contain the other two good creeps available. Take one of them, if you can't get one of the other strong creeps. First, there is the big Satyr camp with the Satyr Hellcaler. He has a 100 damage shockwave and a HP reg aura.
The Enraged Wildekin can summon a Tornado which will damage and slow nearby enemies and provides a +3 armor aura. It's btw the 'tankiest' creep you can get due to his high armor and armor aura. The Tornado can be used to clear creep waves or stacked creep camps or to keep enemies from initiating with their Blink Dagger due to its high AoE (600) and controllability.
The Satyr offers nothing really exciting and the Tornado is a bit hard to control, but because of their high damage, HP and their spells they are some of the best creeps you can get.

3. Creeps we could persuade:

There are the good, the bad... and the guys who have no BAM.
Support is a important part of Chen and sometimes you should give up offensive potential in exchange for supporting your allies. And sometimes, the creeps just don't spawn like you want so you have to take one of those.
The Alpha Wolf can be a lategame creep who increases the damage potential of your carry. It is also the fastest creep available with 350 MS.
The Ogre Magi increases the effective health of allies with his Frost Armor which is slightly worse than Lich's (8 bonus armor instead of 9/ 12 at level 3/ 4).
The Satyr Soulstealer can burn the targets mana and can shut down the early game of some heroes like Tiny or Panda.
And please, don't dare to persuade the other creeps left. Those I listed recently are already almost a reason to laugh at you.

Item Build:

Starting Items:

A chicken is absolutely necessary. Maybe a bunch of Wards to prevent being ganked (more information about defensive warding later). Add a combination of Branches, Tangos and the first part of your Ring of Basilius and there we go.

Core Items:

Get Boots asap. Finish your RoB. Get more Wards, Dust and upgrade the Courier if needed. You don't need more to be effective.
Ring of Basilius helps your creeps tanking the jungle creeps, and gives slight manaregen. (Also for your creeps! They normally don't regenerate mana.)
Boots are a no brainer.
6.65 Addition: With the new Urne of Shadows Bracers are now useless for Chen. The new Item offers everything we need: HP, a bit Manareg and it profits from your ganking. Feel free to get one but make sure your teammates don't get it, too, because only one charge is gained per kill.

Extended Core Items:

The money you don't need to buy wards can be used to build a Mekansm. After finishing it, work for Aghanim's. Normally, the game should end at this point of the game.
Mekansm grants you an additional healing ability and helps your allies and creeps surviving. Chen is a natural Meka carrier.
Since 6.60 it's possible to use Aghanim's Scepter on Chen. It dramatically reduces the cooldown of your ultimate (120 seconds --> 30 seconds). With those two items you are able to regenerate tons of your allies' hitpoints.

Extended Extended Core Items:

If you are a really rich guy after finishing Aghanim's and Mekansm upgrade your boots. I recommend getting Boots of Travel because of the mobility it offers, which is needed in this stage of the game.
If you don't have enough money or need more HP, get Power Treads. The AS is some kind of wasted but 10 more Strength is cool.

Luxury Items:

If you are a really, really rich guy build one of those.
Heart for survival, Guinsoo for disable or Shivas for a bit of both. But you shouldn't be farming for it. Always remember, you are not a carry, you should be spending your money on Wards or Dust or something else.

Situational Items:

Hood or Pipe if you are facing a team full of spellcasters. But you should skip Meka if you have to build a Pipe, because otherwise you might not be able to afford it. Vlads can be a good decision if you want to support your carry and if you have enough money after finishing Aghanim's.

Rejected Items:

That's something I read repetitively in this Forums. 'HotD and Necro3 to maximize your blablabla.' or 'A good Chen should be able to control all those Creeps perfectly.' No thanks. It's hard enough to control your hero and your persuaded creeps to help your team, you shouldn't be concerned about overextending yourself. Also, Mekansm and Aghanim's are way better than those two items.
For a further explanation why I reject Necronomicon, read The Necronomicon issue. But beware: Wall of text.
Force staff is good in theory to help your Centaur/ Furlbolg landing its Stomp but it adds no survivability like Meka and Aghs. And if you get it after those items it will be to late to be effective.

Hero Synergy

Ok... I won't list every DotA hero here, because everyone loves disables and heals in their team and everyone hates them if the enemy got such spells.
In general, Chen works well with every stunner, slower and heroes who need a solo lane to gain fast expirience.

Slardar...great shit. He can initiate a gank with his Sprint/ Stun combo and your creep can hit the second stun/ slow. His ultimate increases the bonus damage of Penitence even more (Reminder: Penitence's bonus damage is physical!) and he's a natural Armlet carrier, that means he will kiss your ass for heals. He's one of your best allies.

The
Vengeful Spirit is a good ally for almost the same reason like Slardar. Good opening Stun, Armor reduction... But Venge is most of the time used as a ganker rather than a carry like Slardar. She does not have to farm and can leave her lane freely. You can roam the map as a couple and kill everything in your way. Very romantic.

Dirge profits greatly from your heals because he is one of the few natural tanks in DotA. His damage enhancing and slowing aura stacks with Penitence and not to forget: more creeps, more soul rippin', bro!

Your creeps are no heroes.
Witch Doctor's Paralyzing Cask will jump between you and your creeps even if you are alone. They get stunned for 5 seconds (!) each jump and you will get stunned repetitively, too. Enough time for the Troll to get off his Maledict and Death Ward (which will target you automatically). That is resulting in death, most of the time. Sad but true.

The only hero that counters every other hero.
Doombringer just eats you alive. His ultimate will prevent you from using spells or even items, that means no healing for you, my friend. Your creeps are just a little snack, thanks to Devour. His nuke is powerful early game (500 damage if you are unlucky) and combined with Doom's damage you will go down quickly. Doom on you, Doom.

Personally, I love to play
Rexxar. His maphack hawk warns him if you plan a gank and will find you in the jungle, his pig will prevent you from escaping, his axes will cut you in pieces and his ultimate provides a single target stun for you and makes your creeps crawl. I can't think of a better counter. Well, perhaps if he gets Hand of Midas...

If Razzil does not throw the concoction soon after it will blow up and Razzil himself will suffer as if he was hit by the concoction. Concoction can blow up mid air if fired too late.

Summon Familiars:

Visage conjures up two blind Familiars from the realm of death. Familiars have high attack power but each attack, up to 6, drains their power and temporarily weakens them.

Familiars can transform into stone, stunning nearby enemy units upon landing and regenerating their health and attack power. Familiars give a large bounty (150 each) if killed.

Level 1: Up to 72 attack damage, 300 HP, 1 second stun.
Level 2: Up to 90 attack damage 400 HP, 1.25 second stun.
Level 3: Up to 108 attack damage 500 HP, 1.5 second stun.

Familiars take reduced damage from spells.

Starts with 0 charges. Each time an enemy hero dies near you, it gains a charge. The first charges increments by 2, so it goes 0/2/3/4/5/etc
Each usage of the item decreases the charge by 1.

Each hero death can only charge up one of these items per death, so more than one hero having this will not increase the charges for both of the items.

Can be cast on an ally to heal, dispels on non-creep damage. Can alternatively be cast on an enemy hero to do half the heal (200) as damage over 8 seconds.

Scroll of Town Portal
- Reworked mechanics

- The casting time system for scroll teleports are now dynamic.
Whenever a hero teleports to an area, it causes any other teleports to that area to be delayed with extra time based on the number of heroes that teleported or are teleporting there. Each teleport leaves has memory lasts about 20 seconds for that location.

This does not affect teleports to the fountain area (it accounts for rough areas around shop area as well).

Example: First hero teleports to his tower, he takes the usual 3 seconds casting time. Then lets say the 3 other heroes teleport right after. The second one that telports after the original has a 5 second teleport time. Then 6 seconds, 7, etc.

- Teleport location effect no longer lies to the enemies about the landing spot

- Enemies now see the colors of the teleporting heroes

- Increases max range on where you can choose teleport near a building from 350 to 525

- The color of the teleport effect changes if you are in delayed teleport mode. It goes to normal once you have the standard 3 seconds left. So both sides can tell if its a quick or a delayed teleport and time things accoringly.

Dota 6.64 Bug & Exploit - Normally, Kunkka - Admiral Proudmoore is not allowed to have Quelling Blade item which increases your damage against non-hero units. But, you can actually get Quelling Blade on Kunkka by performing a simple trick/bug. Kuarinofu has posted a video of it on YouTube, watch it below and just follow the simple in DotA steps to get quellingblade working on Kunkka :)

Surprisingly, it works with Kunkka's Tidebringer means, you can do 35% extra damage. This bug is quite abuse able but IceFrog may release Dota 6.64b for it's fix. Pudge/Vengeful Spirit may also acquire Kelen's Dagger through this trick.

Removing lane opponents:

If you are carrying with Invoker it helps magnificently to start in mid lane. Sure, you lose access to the side shops and therefore easy construction of an Orchid, but the fog of war in mid lane more than makes up for it. By the time early game starts fading out it should be nighttime. Thus when you want to chase your enemy out of the lane all you need to do is pull the creep line back such that you are at the top of the ramp, where your enemy can’t see you. Unless they refuse to farm and deny then they will have to come into the river. Once they are in position, you can start harassing them with your potent spells.

In an Exort build I cast Chaos Meteor or Alacrity. Alacrity if they have shown themselves to be slow to react when I attack them, Chaos Meteor if they tend to run. If they are being cautious and don't give you any opportunities to get close, hit them with a Sunstrike the next time they go in for a last hit.

Wex builds have a fantastic way to send enemies back: EMP. Should this be insufficient you can also try Alacrity or Tornado, though Alacrity tends to be more efficient with its low manacost and cooldown.

With a Quas build I use Cold Snap or Ice Wall. Cold Snap will do a lot of damage if you can trick them to attack you first (and thereby attract fire from your creeps). If the other player is reluctant to engage you then Ice Wall can provide you with a good few seconds to hit them freely. Said reluctant player will be unlikely to suddenly become aggressive, and their response to the appearance of the wall will be to run away.

The hybrid builds are situation dependent. Just use some spell I mentioned in the above sections. It will likely be obvious which spell will be most effective. If not then just swap between the potential spells to stay unpredictable.

Role Considerations

Support: You will not have Alacrity or Forge Spirits until late game, so you will need to rely on items to provide buffs. I recommend the healing items: Mekansm, Urn of Shadows, and Bloodstone.

Disable: A natural build for a Disable Invoker. You already have many disables through your skills, so it might be prudent to use item slots on survivability items, or maybe Aghanim’s. Something like a Blink Dagger or Force Staff would not be untowards as well, since they both increase your ability to chase/initiate.

Push: Your pushes will be slow until you get to higher levels of Tornado, so you will need to build up large waves of allied creeps with Deafening Blast. Consider getting a Mekansm or early Assault Cuirass to aid in this.

Kill: You will need damage items. You don’t do enough by yourself. Go get a Desolator or Radiance so you aren’t useless (don’t forget Radiance is good for Cold Snap and Ghost Walk).

Carry: You can actually become a reasonably solid tank carry if you get the right items. A setup like Heart of Tarrasque, Power Treads, Eye of Skadi, and Manta Style can yield quite a lot of EHP, and help you take advantage of your high regen and disables. Radiance and Mjollnir are also solid item choices to improve your DPS.

Earthshock

Slams the ground, dealing damage to and slowing the movement speed of nearby enemy land units.
Level 1 -- 70 damage, 25% slow
Level 2 -- 120 damage, 35% slow
Level 3 -- 170 damage, 45% slow
Level 4 -- 220 damage, 55% slow

4secs duration at all levels

Overpower

Sends Ulfsaar into a rage until he can expend his energy on a target.
Level 1 -- 45 mana, 400% increased attack speed for 3 attacks
Level 2 -- 55 mana, 400% increased attack speed for 4 attacks
Level 3 -- 65 mana, 400% increased attack speed for 5 attacks
Level 4 -- 75 mana, 400% increased attack speed for 6 attacks

Fury Swipes

Each attack opens the wound deeper in the target, causing subsequent attacks to deal increased damage.
Level 1 -- 5secs, 10 bonus dmg per attack

• This is an orb effect.

Enrage

When activated, greatly increases Ulfsaar's damage based on his current life.
Level 1 -- 4% of current life is dealt in damage.
Level 1 -- 5% of current life is dealt in damage.
Level 1 -- 6% of current life is dealt in damage.

• Doubles the damage dealt by Fury Swipes.

A step-by-step guide

Step 1: Skill Build
1. Overpower
2. Fury Swipes
3. Fury Swipes
4. Overpower
5. Fury Swipes
6. Enrage
7. Fury Swipes

After which Overpower is maxed first,
followed by Earthshock.
Enrage is taken whenever possible, at 11 and 16.

Fury swipes is needed early to take out Roshan.
Earthshock is delayed as 25% slow at level 1 is too ineffective due to Ursa's slow casting animation. Rely on teammates for disables/slows if you are ganking during early levels.

Step 2a: Laning (As Scourge)
Start off with the following items:

If you are going for Set 2, you will be lacking Hp Regen items. Borrow from lanemate or get a RoR from sideshop asap. 100% block is useful against harassment. If you are unsure of how aggresive your lane might be and its harassment type (Magic vs Physical), go for Set 1.
Note: Do not buy quelling blade. It has no effect for Ursa once he learns Fury Swipe.

* Head off to top lane for easier access to jungle. Stick to lane to farm last hits
* Pull neutrals creeps whenever possible (if ally isn't doing it)
* Get a RoR from sideshop for hp regen once you have 350 gold
* Lvl1 Overpower + Lvl 1 Fury Swipe does decent harass dmg. Works well when paired with an ally with a disable/slow

Step 2b: Jungling (As Scourge)
Somewhere in between 5-7 mins, you will reach level 5-6 or so. With Enrage, it makes jungling easier since Fury swipes does double the bonus damage now. To take off higher level creeps,

* cast Overpower, wait till it has cooldown (10secs)
* unleash all your attacks during the remaining 5secs of Overpower, with Enrage on
* Immediately recast Overpower once the bonus attacks are gone
* Keep in mind this Double Overpower tactic

Step 3: Roshan + getting your Blink Dagger
Usually, within 10-12 minutes all components for a Vladmir's Offering can be bought.
You should be approximately level 7 by now.

* Head off to the Ancient Creeps camp for easy money first. Clear them with Double Overpower tactic
* Again with Double Overpower, take out Roshan. You should be near full health when he is dead.
* Head back to Ancient Creeps to clear them again. They should have respawned by now. By now, you should be around Level 9

Farming for Blink Dagger

* Ancient Creeps are great money source so try to stick to laning the bottom lane for last hits. Alternate between the two. If lane pushed too far, go ancient creeping.
* Alternatively, jungle in Sentinel's forest if you know it is safe and go ancient creeping in between.
* Aside from Dagger, you need some gold for a pair of boots too of course

Step 4: Assasination Time

With these items, and at least a level in Earthshock, the time is ripe to pick off lone targets. Remember the to utilize Double Overpower.

Look out for these heroes for a sure kill:
- No Invis ability (unless you have dust/gem/sentry)
- No Stun (likely to escape)
- No Blink or similar abilities eg Surge, Storm's Ball, Lycan's Wolf form.

Note: Dagger has a max range of 1200. However, if you target a location beyond 1200 range, you will only blink for 960 range. It takes practice and good estimation to achieve the maximum.

Damage Approximation

* Fury Swipes damage from 6x attacks (Lvl 4 Overpower) ~ 1000dmg
* Fury Swipes damage from 12x attacks (Double Overpower Tactic) ~ 4000dmg

The said damage are appromixate values from Fury Swipes alone, without bonus damage from Enrage and your base attack. Fury Swipes forms the bulk of the dmg done. As a rule of the thumb, ALL casters die from one Overpower. Certain Strength heroes requires about one-and-a-half Overpower to be killed.
Note: Fury swipes deals double damage (50dmg) when Enrage is active

Step 5: Items Dilemma
Problem 1: By now you will realise that HP isn't an issue but Mana seems to always be giving problems. You cannot sustain going on killing heroes one after the other. You have to come back to the fountain often.

A few solutions:

Having CM on your team is a huge asset for Ursa. Not only does it solves your mana issues, she makes a great lane partner as well.

Linken's is the next best item of choice. It works well in most inhouse and casual pub games. Start by getting a Void stone first to fix your mana problems. Spell block will come in handy versus heroes with a single disable, eg SK, DK, Lina etc. More often than not, the spell block will trigger itself from some random spell in a major teamfight, but it will prove useful especially during the post-battle chases where it is mostly 1v1 or 1v2.

The other alternative is to go Bloodstone. It is not the best item there is but it gives you infinite mana for Earthshocks, Blinks and Overpower. Note that Bloodstone no longer gives bonus HP regen. Aside from Mana, the extra 450HP helps. Start off by buying a Energy Booster for a quick +250 mana boost.
Note:I prefer Linken's in general. Bloodstone is fine if you want an infinite supply of mana but it doesn't grant you any form of spell block/immunity against disables.

Problem 2: You can't seem to be getting killls because there are too many stunners in the opposing team and/or they seem to cluster together. Never a chance to pick off lone targets.

A few solutions:

Have Omniknight to repel you. Again, you hardly see one in a pubgame. If you have a friend, it is worth to try out this combo.

Do plan ahead if you are making Linken's or BKB. Choose one, both is a waste. Note however if you have a Omni for repel, getting Linken's is still a viable choice since Linken's will spell block a purge (from Diffusal) before Repel. Therefore, it will require 2 successive purges from opponent to dispel Repel completey.

Focus on farming for a BKB. It will help you immensely. Note that BKB will dispel your Overpower (so no Double Overpower). Once you Blink + BKB + Stomp in, you need to cast Overpower. This will cost you 0.5secs of casting time.

Still no BKB yet?
Wait for an ally to initiate. If he can soak in the stun for you, you can blink in without being disabled to finish him off. During major teamfights, do the same by hanging around at the back and wait for opponents to release their stuns. Do not blink in into the main fray however, pick off those casters at the far back first. The key is to eliminate all the soft casters with disables and slows. Engage another target only if you have Overpower + Enrage on. Earthshock is spammable as well, provided you have ample mana. Otherwise wait for your Dagger to cooldown for the next opportunity to kill.

Step 6: Roshan every 10 minutes
Take note of the timing you last killed Roshan. He spawns every 10mins after death. You get Cheese + Aegis from the 3rd kill onwards (30mins+)

Tactical usage of Aegis and Cheese:
- Ursa should get the Aegis, pass the Cheese to your next best Carry.
- Upon having an Aegis, you might want to organize a team push since Aegis (and Cheese) raises the chances of a successful push.
- If you die while holding Aegis and 5 enemy heroes are camping beside you, immediately Blink away when you revive. You shouldn't recklessly die this way in the first place, but it does happen once in a while.
(A crude way is to spam blink hotkey and click on a safe spot)

Step 7: Too much cash

Unfortunately, Ursa isn't the kind of hero which does good with Damage items. He can't use orbs, bashes (conflicts with fury swipe) as well as critical items (conflicts as well). I won't go into details here as to why. The surest way to increase his DPS is by getting Heart to amplify his Enrage.

With all the extra HP he has, fit in a Blademail. Blademail does pure damage. What you deal is what you get. If you lose 1000hp, so does your enemy.
In fact, if you already have Bloodstone, your HP should be sufficiently high (~2000HP) to make use of Blademail. Therefore skip Heart for Blademail first.
Usage: Activate the moment you blink+stomp in. Or when focused, whichever comes first.

Also, get Boots of travels. Alternatively, Phase boots.

Step 8: Watch out for counters
Some Specific Counters against Ursa

* Blademail is great and all, but often it is the item that will be used to counter you. So watch out for those spikes after you Blink + Stomp into the crowd. Don't target them.
* Purge from Diffusal kills your Overpower and slows you to a crawl.
* Disables that passes through BKB. Bane (Atropos) is one hell of a nuisance for Ursa especially during early game. He will sleep you often. And his Ultimate passes through BKB, so watch out.
* Mega-slowers like Viper and Lanaya can be as irritating as disablers/stunners

Conclusion
This step-by-step guide, in my opinion, is the best way to introduce someone who is new to Ursa to get intimate with him. It is pretty much a idiot-proof guide by which you follow it and definitely get at least 10 kills with a positive K-D ratio.

To further improve on playing Ursa however, requires a much deeper understanding of the hero and this is where the player himself have to learn and discover at his/her own pace. That said, this guide is meant to serve as a stepping stone for you to master Ursa.

As far as item argument goes, I'm against listing all the viable/recommended/non-recommended items since it doesn't help in making the guide any clearer since most item choices are situational. What I listed are those which works 90% of the time, bearing in mind such games played are either Pubgames or Casual Inhouses.
